Add On To Patrick - Tyree Carrow

To add on to what Patrick had said about how technology is basically taking over the world, I believe what he said is true. Technology is really taking over the world, we can't do nothing without the usage of technology. I personally can't go somewhere in far distance without my phone because I don't know many numbers by heart, I don't know my sense of direction unless I've been there before. In addition, without our technology, we will be living like Cave Man. We would have to cook food by natural sources, be able to communicate without the use of Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and so on. Students, especially me, would suffer without the availability of technology. I could navigate my way through a textbook, but I wouldn't depend on it and I will definitely not learn as much as I would by watching videos or clicking on different links reading different sources about a certain topic that I am assigned to research.

  2. To refute your point, I wouldn't go as far to say that technology will ever overtake the world, it will only be a crutch to humans. As for your example wit communication through facebook, instagram, and twitter, if these services were to ever shut down, some people would freak out but people would learn to deal without it. We discussed Amazon's drones in class today, lets say the project were to just fail completely we would still be able to ship packages, just not as conveniently. As for people that need technology to survive such as people who have received prosthetic organs, humankind as a whole would still survive, obviously the people that need these operations to survive would not, but humans as a whole would manage to continue. As for your statement on jobs, as machines take over humans jobs, humans will create more jobs or find another way to make money doing things machines cannot. My point of all this being that even though technology continues to become more prominent in our lives, it will only be a convenience, never a necessity, therefore never taking over the world.

  3. I think it's a bit glib and naive to assume people will just find jobs that machines are taking. This is not the case and is a serious societal problem. Most folks who lose their jobs do not have the training or resources to work in other professions, and the cost of higher education has skyrocketed to the point of unattainability for the majority of the population. There is a "critical" element here that is important to understand as the overall goal of our course, i.e., not merely assuming that communication technology benefits us but analyzing how it affects our society both positively and negatively.
