  1. In our most recent class, we discussed Media: The Second God by Tony Schwartz. Schwartz relates the development of commercials to the obsoletion of door-to-door salespersons. As commercials are not a tangible good such as technological machines, I had never before related digital advertising to a loss of jobs for humans. Of course, with developments such as robots and automated machines, I realized the physical replacement of jobs as an issue for society. However, it is a new concept within the last century that digital media could replace physical jobs. This is important because although we, as the human race, imagine that technology is improving our lifestyles, we must also remember to maintain a balance between making tasks easier and still having jobs. It is scary to imagine a world where machines automate our lives. If we came to a point where machines could do any task as well as or better than a human, the economy would collapse as no one would have an income. Even now, it is evident that the gap between the rich and the poor is growing, likely as a result of the lack of jobs for the middle class to do. The advancement of automated technological machines has helped our society in some ways and hurt it in others.
